Season 2 of Here Be Monsters begins.

The reasons why I bike at night are diverse. It’s partly because I don’t feel graceful anywhere else, it’s partly to run away and it’s partly out of persistent defiance of my failing vision.

I recently biked out to a parking garage on the outskirts of Boulder, Colorado and remembered the most significant moment of my eighteenth year, a night that made everything I do now possible.

The story involves electronic dance music, a laundromat, a bunch of sweaty teenagers pretending like it’s the eighties and one of the loudest amplifiers I’ve ever heard.

HBM019: The Other One Percent

In 2006, Pete Brook moved from England to California to study the museum at San Quentin State Prison. Through his research, he learned of America's first-in-the-world rates of incarceration inside of prisons that are largely hidden from view.

In 2008, Pete began Prison Photography, a blog that dissects images of prisons and prisoners.

This week’s show is about Pete Brook’s 2011 journey across America to interview photographers, criminologists, and, most of all, the prisoners of New York’s Sing Sing Correctional Facility.

HBM018: How I Learned to Love Rejection (part 2)

In the summer of 2011, a scared 22 year old decided to hitchhike across America. He was trying to meet real Americans. However, there was a caveat—he was also terrified of strangers.

That young traveler was me. Fear was becoming far too prevalent in my life, so I headed out onto the road. This episode looks at the lessons I learned in the first half of that trip, joining a carnival, sleeping in a cemetery, camping with a train rider named puke.

Right now, we’re doing a fundraiser for the show, selling a really unique and funny magazine with photos from this hitchhiking trip. SUPPORT THE SHOW!

HBM016: 10,000 Juggalos

On this episode of the Here Be Monsters Podcast, Director Sean Dunne speaks of the bizarre culture of The Gathering where he found a system of mutual respect and "practicing what you preach" in every aspect from religious tolerance to settling bad drug deals.

The FBI classifies them as a gang. Pop culture has a field day with ridiculing them. But Juggalos and Juggalettes (followers of the Detroit-based rap duo The Insane Clown Posse) aren't going away. In fact, each summer, The Gathering of the Juggalos takes place in rural Illinois, drawing crowds of 10,000 from all over the world.

This episode looks at what it means to live a meaningful life through the eyes of Jacob on a journey took him through our solar system. He's writing a fictionalized children's book about his trip.
